What options did women in the 18th century have to achieve financial stability that didn't involve marriage? This type of man was glamorized for a reason. Had women had the option to socially/financially ascend on their own merit, I'm quite sure we would have glamorized a different type of man and the romances/soap operas of recent years would also look quite different.
