We come from very different backgrounds but I swear we share the same brain! I have never farmed, nor have I ever wanted to, but I feel everything you said here on a very deep level.

I will admit to having escapist fantasies (and even a little bit of a plan), but I know that as flawed as our systems are, if they were to break down completely, the world would indeed become a truly frightening place. The current state of humanity has not instilled any faith in me whatsoever that we as a species are capable of coming together for the common good. It's going to be brutal bloodshed if/when resources become scarce. And armed religious fundamentalists will have the advantage.
