This really resonated with me... in fact, I'm cooking up a Medium piece tentatively called "Everyone Is Better Off with Children in Their Lives: They just don't have to be yours." I have massive amounts of respect for people who choose not to have children, particularly women, who get a lot of unsolicited judgment and questions around that choice. I also think there's a difference between opting into a childfree home and opting into a childfree existence. There's a perception out there, which I know is not shared by all childfree people but certainly some, that the childfree don't need to be involved in any way when it comes to raising the next generation. I don't expect anyone else to parent my kids, but there was a time when childrearing was seen as more of a collective responsibility. I'm thinking of an entire block of neighbors keeping a casual eye on groups of kids running up and down the block. This hardly happens anymore, and the isolation of modern parenting makes it that much harder. I like the sentiment behind parenting-free, even if the term is kind of awkward, simply because it doesn't imply that people without children in their home are, or should be, "free" of children altogether. Plus, children can be massive pains in the behinds, but they can be so wonderful, too! We all benefit form their fresh perspectives and earnest questions.
