This is so true and something I've been thinking a lot about as my biracial daughter gets older and the assumptions about her change. Before, her intensity was "cute"; now, she's more likely to be branded by her white teachers as a troublemaker. I'm preparing for a parent/teacher conference today where I plan to challenge these assumptions and urge her teachers to try harder to see her essence. Who knows, maybe a story will come out of it!
