This is a great reminder, thank you! Every time there's something we're all talking about, my first thought is, "When will we stop caring?" It's partially that we have short attention spans. It's also that there is so much going on, at any given time, it's hard to care about one thing for a sustained period of time, particularly if it's not something that affects us personally. It's why white people fade in and out of the Black Lives Matter movement, why our appetite for consuming news about long-term atrocities overseas wanes over time. One reason Covid stayed so top-of-mind for so long was that it had a direct impact on our day-to-day lives. Personally, while I don't want to ever "not care" about all the terrible, unjust things going on in the world, I've also found it incredibly helpful - from a mental/emotional health standpoint - to focus my energy first and foremost on my immediate community. It's where I can have a direct impact, where I'm building a future for myself and my children, and where I can find support and solace if and when disaster strikes close to home.
