The World is Ending So I Think I’ll Remodel My Kitchen
How do we plan and dream in these uncertain times?
I’m not actually going to remodel my kitchen. Not anytime soon, at least. But that has less to do with the fact that the world is ending and more to do with the fact that my partner is taking a (not altogether voluntary) career break.
A few months back, I did get a quote from a contractor about a potential kitchen remodel. It’s a project I’ve longed to do for a decade now, and not because I pine for granite countertops. It’s because I spend a lot of goddamn time in the kitchen. I would like it to feel more like the center of our home and not like a hasty afterthought.
The only traditionally “feminine” role that I enthusiastically embrace is cooking dinner for my family. I’m even more enthusiastic about when the dinner is actually consumed by my family, preferably without any sighs or nose wrinkles. But truth be told, my reasons for cooking dinner are selfish. I love eating, and I especially love eating things I cook. I also love snacking on dinner as I prepare it and I love finishing up the scraps of everyone else’s dinner as my partner cleans up.
