Thanks for your honesty and for raising some thought-provoking questions! I've been thinking about this so much lately, especially as we prepare to take our first international trip as a family to Ghana next summer so that my husband and children can see their homeland. I read something recently that really hit home -- we're honestly beyond the point of consumer behavior moving the needle when it comes to climate change. Does that mean we should eat hamburgers every day, buy an SUV, and gallivant around the world? Certainly not. But we need much more drastic change at a systemic level to keep our planet habitable for our children. The article pointed out that spending two hours a month organizing against the fossil fuel industry is more impactful than an entire year's worth of frugal consumer habits. I will continue to to partake in as many environmentally friendly practices as I can, but shaming individuals for their behavior is not productive. What is productive is holding our leaders and the fossil fuel industry accountable for the reckless greed and willful ignorance that have gotten us here.
