My goodness, this is so beautifully rendered. I'm far from being an empty nester (kids are 12 & 8) but I can still relate to this feeling of push and pull. When I travel for work, I relish the clean hotel rooms and time alone; I also long for the color and chaos of home. It's hard to find that middle ground between too quiet and too loud!
