It's true, though my guess is that in the 80s, those predictions were connected to the ozone layer -- a problem we actually more or less solved by reducing CFCs. If we hadn't, the world would have indeed become unlivable. But we just haven't been able to come together to solve climate change, despite the fact that we have all the technology and resources at our disposal to do so.
