I would argue that this is far less regimented than what my kids have been doing in full-time childcare and/or after-care for 4+ years. Beyond taking care of basic chores & hygiene, they are free to read whatever books they'd like and to engage in free play outside. (The computer time is entirely optional and is only included there to make the 20-minute time limit crystal clear. In fact, much of this was geared toward limiting screen time.) Have you ever tried to work while two children are directing themselves? 😉 After doing it full-time for multiple months during COVID and nearly losing my mind, I learned that a loose structure is essential. Sure, they can self-direct their play for a while, but it becomes far more difficult when there are multiple hours to fill and especially when mom has the nerve to not be immediately available whenever they need her!
