I was born and raised in the U.S., though I perhaps had a more collectivist upbringing (hippie parents, San Francisco) than most. Even so, I've collected unemployment, received Covid stimulus checks, gotten tax breaks, received free state healthcare for my kids, and sent my kids to public school. There are ways that our government takes care of us, albeit far fewer ways than in most other developed countries. When it comes to issues like paid leave and universal childcare, I have to believe that the lack of political will comes from them being seen as "women's issues." In fact, men would hugely benefit as well, as would our economy, but that's not the public perception.
