I Just Became a Co-Owner of My Company, and It’s a Really Big Deal
Ownership changes everything
I’ve signed the final papers and transferred my share to the company checking account. I’m now officially a co-owner of the digital marketing agency where I have been working for almost four years.
In practice, not much will change in my day-to-day work life. I will still report to our CEO and my job responsibilities will remain the same.
In a way, it reminds me of buying my first home. When my husband and I moved in, it felt more or less like any other move. We still had to contend with a jumble of poorly organized boxes, still had to find ways to fill blank walls, still had to write a painful check at the beginning of the month.
But in the eight years since we signed the deed, I’ve come to understand that renting and owning are worlds apart. As homeowners, we’ve felt more invested in our community and gone to greater lengths to meet our neighbors. I landscaped our front yard, despite the fact that I’m not that great at keeping plants alive. My husband built a path along the side of the house, and we both nearly wrecked our backs laying down a flagstone patio. Inside, we’ve painted walls, and painted more walls, and laid down carpet and hung shelves.
