I could have highlighted most of this story, but I tried to restrain myself. I used to write op-ed columns for my college newspaper and I distinctly remember the day when they enabled online comments. At first I thought, "Cool!" And after one day, I wanted to hide under my bed and cry. The letters to the editor (where people actually had to sign their name) were just not so mean! Thick skin or no, writing in this day and age can be hazardous to your mental health. I also loved your reference to Thursday night TV! Yes, there were more (white male) gatekeepers back then so I don't want to over-romanticize, but I do get nostalgic for the days when everyone watched the same shows. Thursday night was the only night we were allowed to watch TV in my home growing up (we wheeled it out of our hall closet) and it was a truly special occasion. I could go on and on... maybe I'll have to write a story of my own :)
