I always learn so much from your articles, Elle! I kind of regret taking my partner's last name. At the time, it was important to him and it just seemed easier for us all to have the same last name. We've both evolved a lot since then; I'm not sure it would be important to him now. In retrospect, I wish we had come up with a new last name together. I like the symbolism - both of us transitioning from our "first families" to start our own - and it avoids all the complications that come with more than one generation of hyphenated names. Plus, you can come up with something that sounds great appended to both your first names!
