First, I’m so sorry to hear about how badly you’ve been affected by Covid. That sounds absolutely awful. My best wishes for your continued recovery and best wishes to your father as well. I am in 100% agreement that we should be prioritizing vaccinations — in fact, consistent vaccine mandates are one thing that would help most of us get on with our lives. And Covid is absolutely something we need to take seriously — I understand most of the anxiety around it and have felt much of it myself. It’s just our laser focus I’m concerned about. Everyone talks about our healthcare workers, and the reality is that only a fraction are actually on the front lines treating Covid patients. And yes, they need all the support they can get. At the same time, the rest of our healthcare workers are confronting a secondary epidemic of anxiety/depression that they’re not really equipped to handle. Neither are our employers, our schools, or our country at large. And people are dying, too — drug overdoses, suicides, and car wrecks are all on the rise. So I just hope we can start paying more attention to that and Covid, rather than making every decision through a singular Covid lens. In any case, lots to noodle on here, but thanks for reading and for sharing your story!
